Yes, Your Air Conditioner Works, But Do You Know How It Does The Job?

Your air conditioner works the same way as a freezer, only it can cool a room or an entire household rather than just a small, insulated space. The key to air conditioning is refrigerant, which can easily convert from a liquid to a gas as it cycles through the air conditioner’s three main parts: the compressor, condenser coil and evaporator coil. Here’s how these components work together to keep your home cool.

The compressor and condenser are located on the exterior of your home, while the evaporator coil is indoors. When cool, low-pressure refrigerant arrives at the compressor as a gas, it is compressed, forcing the molecules closer together. This causes the refrigerant to become a hot, high-pressure gas as it flows into the condenser coil.

The condenser coil is the large box-like unit outside your home with metal fins that act like a radiator. As the refrigerant flows into it, the heat is dispelled quickly thanks to the fins. As heat is released, the refrigerant cools and converts from a gas to a liquid under high pressure.

The liquid refrigerant passes into the indoor evaporator coil through a tiny hole. The pressure drops on the other side, and as the liquid evaporates, it converts back into a gas. Relatively warm air from inside your home is blown over the evaporator coil’s fins where the refrigerant extracts heat from the air so it can blow back into your home ice-cold.

Upon leaving the evaporator coil, the refrigerant has returned to a cool, low-pressure gas. It circulates back to the compressor where the trip begins all over again. This process repeats over and over until the temperature in your home meets the thermostat setting. Then, the air conditioner cycles off until heat gain requires that it turns back on.
